Position Summary 

We are seeking a Sr. Computational Biologist to join our growing computational biology team, who are tasked with tackling one of the most important and fascinating challenges in the Karius platform. Given the novel nature of the signal, our work has gone well beyond simply implementing algorithms, and towards the development of new methods with novelty and impact that is appreciated by the broader community. Through the development of mathematical models and statistical inference algorithms, you will continue to improve the accuracy and actionability of our technology, as well as the interpretability of our new data type - microbial cell-free DNA.

Reports to:    Sr. Manager,  Head of Computational Biology  

Location:  Redwood City, CA. Remote will be considered.  


Primary Responsibilities

  • Conduct research aimed at identifying computational opportunities for the improvement of our technology’s analytical and clinical performance, as well as clinical utility, based on our validated molecular assays and sequencing data.
  • Develop and implement probabilistic models and algorithms, as well as paired statistical models for quality control.
  • Participate and lead in the publication of novel computational methods.
  • Apply and develop new tools or data-mining techniques for integrative analysis and visualization of large data sets.
  • Validate the performance of the implemented improvements by conducting studies, meeting the bar of a clinical-grade product.
  • Stay abreast of related developments in the field of computational biology and microbial computational biology, as well as related developments in machine-learning and generative models.
  • Contribute to the enhancements of computational biology research and development practices, aimed at creating a high-throughput, top-quality, collaborative, and community-engaged computational biology team. 
  • Work closely with the product, engineering, medical, and scientific teams, contributing to the company's goals, and partnering in the development of our products.

Physical Requirements
Subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing, vision to monitor and moderate noise levels. Work is generally performed in an office, lab or clinical environment, but remote location in the same time-zone will be considered assuming periodic travel to the office. 


Position Requirements

  • PhD in computer science, statistics, physics, or related fields, preferably with a focus on computational biology; post-doc preferred. 2+ years of biotech experience, or equivalent.
  • Significant development and publications of innovative mathematical models used in the investigation and interpretation of biological data.
  • Experience with, and understanding of, modern statistics and machine learning. Greater emphasis on advanced probabilistic graphical models, generative models, and related algorithms.
  • Proficiency in working with large-scale datasets.
  • Familiarity and experience with bioinformatics tools, approaches and workflows, particularly those related to next-generation sequencing data analysis.
  • Familiarity with a range of relevant laboratory techniques (either through hands-on work or from collaborations with laboratory-focused colleagues).
  • Contributions to the open-source community, preferred.
