Position Summary:
As a Process Development Scientist you will work for a leader in NGS-based infectious disease diagnostics, with a career designed to collaborate and affect change while expanding your process and automation skills and technical knowledge. The Process Development Scientist plans, prepares, conducts and records complex bench molecular biology as well as automation experiments that are aimed at delivering a stable and reliable diagnostic product with high integrity. You will prepare, analyze and report the results related to product, process, and its automation development and improvement. 

Reports to: Director, Research 
Location: Redwood City, CA

Responsibilities Include:  
- Identifies ways to translate bench-developed NGS diagnostic assays into highly automated processes compatible with a large production scale, and high reliability.
- Designs, plans, conducts and records results from complex experiments related to optimization, stabilization, and automation of the laboratory portion of Karius’ diagnostic pipelines.
- Identifies problems, performs root cause analysis, investigates alternatives and recommends preventive or corrective actions.
- Performs laboratory experiments following defined protocols and company procedures.
- Reports status of the assigned projects through the preparation of detailed reports and documentation that summarize experiment results.
- Reviews and interprets analytical test results and data generated by the on-going production in order to identify ways to make improvements in methods and technology.
- Maintains knowledge of technological developments that may assist in the completion of an assignment or lead to new products, processes or procedures by reading current literature and following the trends in automation.
- Effectively utilizes and applies advanced methods or technologies.

Physical Requirements:   Subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing, vision to monitor and moderate noise levels. 

Position Requirements: 
- A minimum of 4 years relevant industry experience with a Master's degree or Ph.D (in physical or biological sciences).
- NGS and/or diagnostic assay development experience.
- Experience with process and equipment validation.
- Experience in developing, implementing and/or validating automation workflows 
- Automated liquid handling experience.
- An investigative and analytical mind and methodical approach to testing processes
- Familiarity with Hamilton programming is highly desirable.
- Experience with scripting languages such as Linux, Python and SQL is desirable.
- Demonstrated excellence in planning, executing, troubleshooting and analyzing experiments.
